Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc – If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act
Dear Steve,
On June 1, you shared a letter on Reddit’s blog “Remember the Human – Black Lives Matter”. In this letter, you claim “as Snoos, we do not tolerate hate, racism, and violence, and while we have work to do to fight these on our platform, our values are clear.”
As of today, neither you nor any other Reddit admins have shared this letter anywhere on reddit.com. However, the response to this message was swift on Twitter, where you were rightfully labeled as hypocritical based on your long and well-recorded history of defending racism and white supremacy on this site.
Among the many responses was this message from former CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao.
I am obligated to call you out: You should have shut down the_donald instead of amplifying it and its hate, racism, and violence. So much of what is happening now lies at your feet. You don't get to say BLM when reddit nurtures and monetizes white supremacy and hate all day long
Many others shared links and screenshots of your past statements saying “Open racism and slurs are fine to post on Reddit”.
The problem of Reddit’s leadership supporting and providing a platform for racist users and hateful communities has long been an issue. Nearly six years ago, dozens of subreddits signed the original open letter to the Reddit admins calling for action. While the Reddit admins acknowledged the letter and said it was a high priority to address this issue, extremely little has been done in the intervening years.
On June 5, you shared this update on /Announcements, Upcoming changes to our content policy, our board, and where we’re going from here. In the post, you stated that there is a need for continued adjustments of Reddit’s content policy to address racism and that this remains a priority. These continued statements that you hear us, that this is a priority, or that you are working on it are not enough. It has been five years since your return as CEO and this still remains Reddit’s most glaring problem.
Steve, if you and Reddit genuinely care about the values of standing up to racism and hate, then you need to back it up with real action. As moderators on this website who have dedicated countless hours to keeping this site running, we call on Reddit to take the following steps:
At /AgainstHateSubreddits, we have laid out the many failures of Steve time and again to stand up to white supremacy on this site time and time and time again.
With a website with the impact of Reddit on the broader conversations being held in communities around the world, this website needs real leadership and real action.
We hope that Reddit will not just share empty platitudes — but will take a meaningful stand against hate, and take these recommendations to heart.
This letter is co-signed by more than 200 300 350 430 550 650 800 communities representing well over 200 hundreds of millions of subscribers:

2020.09.22 21:27 zamiafloridana ISO tiny home build site

I am about 75% done with my tiny home build and due to circumstances outside my control am in need of a new build site. The house is roofed and sided, 24'x8.5' and on wheels. I just need to finish plumbing and finish work inside. Hoping to finish this ASAP and will need access to power. Unlimited access to the site is ideal because I am still working and need to build during weird hours, but am also open to setting a schedule. I am self employed and can be flexible. I am having the home hauled from Colorado where I am currently located to Orlando at the end of October, date flexible. I am an Orlando native and it makes the most sense to return home to finish out this project (plus winter is coming and I have Florida blood!). I have no idea what a fair price would be but I am willing to discuss payment, I am more than happy to pay for my time on the property. Anyone have any leads?!

2020.09.22 10:43 iTakeitBig Trip Report(s): Cirque of the Towers-WY & Four Pass Loop-CO

Howdy Guys,
Long time listener, first time caller. I've learned a lot from this sub and just wanted to give back a bit, so I'm writing this trip report of my first two backpacking trip. I hope it's useful, especially coming from a beginner perspective.

Backpacking background: My first attempt at backpacking was trying the Outer Mountain Loop in Big Bend with eight buddies. It did not go well as I was still hungover 2 days after stopping at a bar in BFE west Texas and realizing drinks were only a dollar. The full on band costume didn't help either (pictures in album). We made it a mile in and decided to do something more within our wheelhouse.
I then moved to SLC and started hiking and skiing more. After gaining more fitness, I decided to try backpacking again- This is how it went:

First Backpacking Trip/Cirque of the Towers Trip Report:
My first real backpacking trip was Cirque of the Towers in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. My girlfriend and I decided to do it mid July in 3 days and 2 nights. ~25 miles, 4,000ft.
After surviving the pretty brutal road to the trailhead, finding a place to camp after dark, and then waking up and downing some trailhead Trulys, we set off clockwise (which I would recommend if doing the full Cirque) and had a big day of about 10 miles on the first day with maybe 1k vert. We then hit Texas Pass which accounted for most of the elevation gain. It was much more pleasant just hitting the climb straight-up as opposed to the gradual climb you would face going counter-clockwise.
Once you gain Texas Pass you're really in the Cirque. The best views we had were on day 2/early day 3.
We then finished off the hike, relationship and legs still intact. 10/10 would recommend, the Winds are one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.
Pros: Tons of water, tons of glacial lakes, stellar views, pretty easy, no permit required.
Cons: Bugs can be a major issue, first day (if clockwise) is less than spectacular, can be crowded (especially around Big Sandy Lake).
Takeaways:

Ultralight Improvements/Second backpacking trip:
I got hammered one night and ended up in a discord with some friends of friends. I eventually invited myself onto a trip they had planned for the Four Pass Loop in early September. We were all surprised when all three of us actually showed up in Aspen at the date we had planned.
This time I had actually weighed everything I was taking, pared down a lot of items (even cut my toothbrush in half!), brought only two pair of undies, and upgraded my tent to the Durston xMid. Overall, I was rocking around 20 pounds base weight, down form ~30 on my first trip.
Just being aware of how much everything I was bringing weighed and making a conscious decision of whether I needed the item or not made a big difference. Between my lighter pack, my increased fitness, and having someone from sea level with little aerobic training setting the pace, I felt great.
Four Pass Loop Trip Report:
Ended up being around 4 days with 3 nights. ~27 miles, 7000 ft.
We parked at the Aspen Snowmass parking garage, got our packs arranged, and chugged some beers, before heading to the shuttle to catch a ride to the TH. The elevation must have gotten to me though, because I almost left my hiking poles and had to buy some new sunglasses because I lost mine between walking from the car to the shuttle.
We started hiking around 5 and made a few miles before setting up camp. It was a real pain to find a camp sometimes, because many of the most convenient sites were closed for regrowth and we're lazy.
Much like the Cirque loop, the first day was pretty lackluster for how hyped this trip is, but once you gain the passes you have those 'aha' moments. My favorite thing about Colorado is that when you get high up, you just feel like you're in a sea of mountains; as far as you can see the mountains just keep going. As the name implies, there are four passes on this route. The most scenic views were definitely on top of them.
After the first day we did around 9 miles the next 2 full days and then finished with another 7 miles on the last day.
Water was a bit more scarce than I'm sure it usually is as it was pretty late in the season (many streambeds were dry/trickling), but we never had any trouble finding any. We did have issues with rolling into a good camp with less water than we wanted, but that was likely user error. We also went in-between wildflower season and fall colors which was kind of a bummer, but it was still beautiful non-the-less. We were blessed with seasonly warm weather, which was nice.
Overall, it's a really beautiful trip. The vert leading up to the passes is no joke though. I was super proud of my friend that came from sea level with no training, on his first backpacking (and camping trip) , and not only finished the trip, but kind of enjoyed it. It was genuinely one of the most impressive things I've seen and I'm not sure I would've been able to finish if I was in his position.
8/10: would do again
Pros: endless mountains, good intermediate challenge, no permit
Cons: lots of people

Paulette regenerates into a tropical storm, because why not?

As if the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season couldn't get weird enough, an area of low pressure which transitioned from a Category 2 hurricane into a powerful extratropical cyclone on Wednesday, 16 September, drifted northeastward over the open waters of the northern Atlantic, and then dipped far southward over the northeastern Atlantic, has redeveloped into a full-fledged tropical storm to the south of the Azores this morning. The National Hurricane Center welcomed back Paulette at 3:00 AM local time (Azores Summer Time, which is the same as UTC).
Animated infrared imagery has depicted a gradual increase in deep convection over the past several hours near and to the east of the still well-defined low-level center. The development of this convection has strengthened surface-level winds within the cyclone, according to recent scatterometer data, which indicates that the storm is now producing maximum one-minute sustained winds of 50 knots (60 miles per hour)! Scatterometer data also helped to confirm that Paulette is producing these winds within a very small radius from the low-level center, indicating that Paulette has undergone transition into a tropical cyclone, not merely a subtropical cyclone. This is the real deal, folks.
Paulette is currently moving toward the east-northeast along the northwestern periphery of a subtropical ridge centered over the Sahara Desert. The storm is being pushed forward by a deepening mid-latitude trough which has dug southeastward over the northeastern Atlantic over the past couple of days.
Latest data NHC Advisory #40 3:00 AM GMT
Current location: 33.9°N 25.3°W 899 miles (1447 km) NE of Hamilton, Bermuda
Forward motion: ENE (75°) at 14 knots (26 km/h)
Maximum winds: 50 knots (95 km/h)
Intensity: Tropical Storm
Minimum pressure: 1004 millibars (29.65 inches)

Forecast discussion

Last updated: Tuesday, 22 September 2020 - 2:50 AM GMT

Paulette is not expected to undergo any additional strengthening

Paulette has managed to regenerate in an area of the Atlantic which would not ordinarily support the development of a full-fledged tropical cyclone, primarily because the sea-surface temperatures (24 to 25°C) are too cool to support the development of sustained deep convection near the low-level center. However, because the cyclone has maintained a well-defined low-level circulation and because upper-level temperatures have been frigid enough, there has been sufficient atmospheric instability for convection to develop and thrive.
Paulette is not expected to undergo any significant development as it drifts toward the east-northeast over the next couple of days. Sea-surface temperatures are expected to continue to gradually decrease as Paulette approaches the Bay of Biscay and north-northeasterly shear is expected to increase to around 25 to 30 knots. Paulette is expected to remain a tropical cyclone through Thursday afternoon before degenerating into a remnant low and turning sharply toward the southwest as the increasingly shallow cyclone becomes embedded within low-level easterly flow. Unlike Alpha last week, Paulette is not expected to make landfall over mainland Portugal.

2020.09.21 20:38 tengrrl Help Support the WAC Clearinghouse

Hi Folks,
I’m writing to announce the launch of the WAC Clearinghouse’s first fund drive. You might know that the Clearinghouse provides high-quality scholarly publications available at no cost to everyone (you can see our website at https://wac.colostate.edu). To date, we’ve made more than 125 books available in open-access formats, most of them original and some as re-publications. We currently support six academic journals and provide access to a dozen others in archival form. We have become the home for CompPile, the leading database in writing studies, and are working to update and expand its coverage. And we offer a rich set of resources for writers and writing instructors. All of these publications and resources are well used. In the past year, we’ve received more than three million visits to our website and three million downloads of our journal articles and books.
The Clearinghouse relies primarily on the volunteer labor of more than 180 people for nearly all of our work (keeping our production costs to less than 10 percent of those borne by the average scholarly press). But we still incur costs, including those related to copyediting and designing our books, charges for ISBN numbers and DOI registration, and software and equipment expenses, to name a few.
We’re hoping you might be able to help us cover those costs. We know that many of our readers, like us, are dealing with unusual challenges at this time, which is why we are thankful that the Colorado State University Foundation, which manages our charitable giving, can accept donations of as small as $10. The Foundation also supports sustaining contributions, which are given on a monthly basis. As few as 15 sustaining contributions of $10 per month will cover the cost of producing one of our books, and just 75 one-time contributions of $20 will cover the cost of copy editing one journal issue.
We hope you’ll help us continue to make the CompPile database available to the writing studies community, expand our collection of open-access books, support new and established journals, and grow our collection of teaching, scholarly, and professional resources for the WAC and writing studies communities. To find out how to contribute, see https://wac.colostate.edu/support/.
Thanks,
Mike

2020.09.21 01:57 gregcoit Using trumps words against him

I'm a liberal who lives in a rural, trump-loving community (fortunately, it's a blue county in Colorado which is on the blue-side of purple nowadays). I obviously support Biden and Harris and contribute what money I can, but I want to do more.
The good news is that trump is his own wort enemy, and I want to use his own words against him. I'm hoping to crowd source a list of the lies, contradictions, crazy, racist and/or otherwise anti-america things trump has said. The plan is to print this list out, along with the urls of the sources (and a link this post as well for those who don't want to type all the urls ) and mail it to everyone in my neighborhood with a trump poster in front of their house. Sadly, most won't be swayed by facts, no matter the source, but some may be.
My preference would be that we use primary sources - ie: video or audio of the man himself, or links to his own tweets. When this isn't possible then fact-checking by conservative-friendly news organizations would be preferable over liberal-friendly news organizations. Neutral news sites like PBS, NPR and the BBC would suffice as well.
I'm planning to invite the "trump criticizes trump" subreddit to contribute to the list as well
Please no altered videos or quotes taken out of context. I want this list to be impeachable in it's truth (unlike you know who).
Examples:
I'll try to update this list with the stuff you all find. I'll keep the list in date order unless we find examples of him directly contradicting himself (the date will then be the first statement). If you find a "better" source for something someone else has already posted, please add it as a comment to the original posting in this thread for sanity's sake.
One last thing. You may be tempted the gift reddit coins to me or others who contribute to this thread. While the thought is appreciated, my hope is that you would give that money to the candidate of your choice, be they a local or national candidate. I genuinely believe this country would be unrecognizable, and democracy would be dead, after another 4 years of trump.

2020.09.20 17:55 dogs34567 The Day my Ski mask saved my life

Everyone has tales about the strange. My story is about how my half-hole mask saved my life.Late in December, I was traveling north from Washington to my home state of Colorado. Nothing to fancy, I was just going to visit the family for the holidays. On my way north I hit a snow storm, nothing awful, just a lot of snow falling all at once.
I wasn’t worried about the small increase of snow at first, considering I had snow tires installed on my Jeep before I started my long journey home. I did, however, get a little hesitant to drive when the snow started to really come down. The large amount of falling snow coupled with the large amount already littering the ground as I traveled higher into the mountains caused me to consider finding a place to stay for the night. I figured I could get some sleep while the storm passes over, that and the fact that I could give my car’s heater a break before it would decide to burst into flames- or worse, just stop working all together. I scanned as much of the landscape as I could, but there were no buildings in the immediate area. The only other option that I had for my predicament was to keep driving and hope there was a town or exit nearby that I could take in order to escape from the storm. I must have been driving for at least an hour before I saw a sign up ahead indicating how far the closest city was. My heart sank a little when I read 162 miles as it flew by my windshield and vanished into the snowy night. At this point the snow was beating against my windshield, and I knew that I wasn’t going to last 162 minutes let alone 162 miles.
The digital clock on my radio read 1:21AM, and I decided that the next turn off I saw I would take and hope that I could find a neighborhood that will produce some results on my current endeavor. My thought process was: either freeze to death in my car, or stay the night at some random person’s house. Weighing the two options in my head I picked the only thing a sane person would pick and go with the house.
Another 30 minutes flew by, and still no luck finding a place to pull off. Just when I was starting to loose hope I saw a turn off in the distance. A small shape started make its way closer into my head lights and on further inspection it was reveled to me that they were two wooden poles that possibly belonged to a fence. When I turned onto the road between the two wooden poles the ground beneath me felt rocky and rough, like I was traveling on gravel. I didn’t drive for too long before I started to see a small cabin creep into my field of view.
The lights in the cabin were off, but the place seemed to be in good shape. I parked my car under a tall wild-looking tree that took residence on the cabin’s front lawn. Getting out of my car, I immediately grabbed my extra jacket and put it on pulling the half-hole mask I wore around my neck up and over my ears to keep the heat around my face. I put my cap on and trudged up to the cabin after putting my cap snug on my head. As I traveled through the cold windy night up to, what I felt was my salvation I immediately regretted not getting any gloves for my hands.
Despite the irritation I had with my hands, my face and the rest of my body were comfortably warm so I didn’t have much room to complain. I stuffed my frozen hands deep into my pockets and continued my journey across the cabin’s lawn. As I made my way to the door I noticed something odd. There was no indication of life anywhere; there wasn’t even a car in the front yard.
Taking my right hand out of my pocket I knocked 3 times, waiting patiently before saying “H-hello? Is anyone in there? I’m sorry to bother you so late at night, but I need a place to stay for a few hours.”
Nothing answered my plea for help, so I knocked 3 more times on the door hitting my knuckles harder against the aged wood of the entrance. “Hello?” I said again a little louder before continuing with “I’m not here to rob you or anything; I just need a place to stay for the rest of the night. I promise I’ll be gone by sunrise.”
As I finished my sentence I touched the ornate metal door handle. Noticing that the door seemed to be unlocked I said in a loud voice “I’m coming in now, if there’s anybody in there let me know now please.”
I pressed the metal leaver down, finding it a bit odd that the door was unlocked, and opened the door with little resistance on the other end closing it behind me with about the same resistance despite the fact the door looked really old. Looking around the area I noticed the cabin had 5 rooms: the living room- which was the biggest room- a small kitchen, an even smaller washroom, and- what I assumed were- 2 small bedrooms in the back. No lights were on inside the cozy cabin making it almost pitch dark if my eyes weren’t already adjusted to the darkness from outside. I decided the best thing to do would be to search for a light switch, so I took out my phone and turned on my flashlight app to scan the walls. My scan produced no results however, and at the risk of losing precious battery power on my phone I decided the best option would be to turn off the light and put my phone on airplane mode.
Before turning off my light I studied the paintings hanging on the wall that I glossed over in the initial scan. Each painting that crossed my sights was just typical landscapes or harbors- things like that. There was a painting that looked like a fox hunt or something like that, but other than that it was just typical paintings you would see hanging on the walls around an elderly person’s home. There was a painting, however, that caught my attention. The painting was small and consisted of what looked like two adults- a mother and father- a teenage girl, and a small child. The family captured in that painting were wearing what looked like Victorian era clothing. I’m only guessing about the clothes, I mean they could have been from the 1800’s or the early 20th century- the point is that the clothing was very ornate and regal. There was something really disturbing about the image in the painting though. The faces of each member of the family looked like they were smoothed over with clay- it’s kind of hard to describe it, but the 3 family members looked like they had no facial features. By no facial features I mean instead of the normal facial features you and I have, the 3 people in the painting hade grooves of smooth flesh where normally you have an eye, nose, or mouth.
The only person in the painting that didn’t posses a blank face was the teenage girl, which had normal facial features for a teenage girl- in fact she was quite breath taking. I pulled myself away from the painting to take a glance at my phone for the time. My phone indicated that it was passed 2 o’clock in the morning, so I decided to go to the back room and check to see if it was occupied. To my relief the room was vacant besides a medium sized bed, ornate dresser, and nightstand there wasn’t much to go by. The walls were blank besides more sappy paintings to give it a little more atmosphere.
Although there was no indication of a heating system- besides a chimney- the rooms were bearable enough that I figured I could just bundle up in my clothes under the covers in order to stay warm. I was only going to be there for a few hours anyway, so there wasn’t much point in starting a fire plus the people who owned the cabin wouldn’t be back tonight considering how late it was. I hopped into the worn out bed facing the open door next to another door I assumed was a closet and pulled my half-hole mask completely up and over my face to make sure my head would stay nice and warm the rest of my stay. Pulling the fabric of my mask down slightly I set the alarm on my phone for 4:30AM and put it back down onto the nightstand. I covered my face again and bundled up tightly with the sheets, closing my eyes and letting dreamland take me away until I woke up after what felt like minutes later to the sound of scratching.
My body froze as I heard the noise over and over again softly coming from the closed door. I tried to relax myself by thinking that all the noise that I heard was just a rat or some other animal that was spending the night in the closet while the cabin’s owners were away. Quietly I shifted onto my back, pulling my half-hole mask down slightly so a little slit appeared giving me a small window to look at what was out there. I laid on the bed stiff as a board with my cap and mask covering my face in such a way that it acted like a visor giving me a small peak at what was in the darkness. Thankfully my eyes were still adjusted to the dark, which gave me a small amount of reassurance as I continued looking in the direction the scratching noise was coming from.
The scratching continued louder and longer for what seemed like minutes until just like that, it suddenly stopped. Silence filled the room again, but it wasn’t a safe kind of silence. The deafening silence in the room was a foreboding ominous sort of silence. The vacuum of sound in the air was the type of silence that happens in a movie just before something jumps out at you. Just when I began to calm myself down the door knob to closet began to jiggle and turn very slowly.
My heart was racing out of my chest as I saw and heard that knob turn, and every inch of my body wanted to bolt out of that bed and out of that cabin before whatever was on the other side of that door got out after me. I laid perfectly still on the bed despite the fact that I had a cocktail of adrenalin, nerves, and instincts telling me to get the hell out of there. My eyes widened as the door to the closet opened slightly and I saw what looked like a dried head attached to an elongated neck pop out of the opening followed by a skeletal body. The thing that was emerging from the closet crawled on all fours out of the doorway and slowly made its way to the bed I was sleeping in. I had never been more frightened in my whole entire life as the thing stood up, almost touching the roof of the cabin, and looked down in my direction.
The creature stood there studying me as I peeked through the thin slit in my mask, pure terror swirling around in my mind as I glanced up at the body of the creature. Looking at the creatures’ skeletal face I noticed that it had no eyes in its’ eye sockets, which lead me to believe that it couldn’t see me even though I could see it. Just when the idea of it not being able to see me started to give me a little comfort the creature began to speak.
“Strange…” The creature whispered softly as it stroked my face with a cold moist giant hand while continuing to watch me, and then began to speak again.
“It has no fear of me…” The creature continued to say in a hoarse tone as it began to breathe loudly, continuing to look at me and gripping down on the edge of my bed. Feeling the creatures’ bonny hand touch the edge of my bed caused my brain to go into complete panic mode. The only thing that stopped me from jumping up was the thought that maybe the creature believed I was dead or asleep and wouldn’t attack.
“How can it not fear…? How can it not fear me..?” The thing said through clenched teeth and jagged sharp teeth before loudly gasping and suddenly pulling back with its’ mouth open in an expression that seemed like fear.
“It has no face.” The thing whispered to itself as it continued to back away.
“It has no face.” The creature said again, but this time louder than before and slightly more threatening.
“It has no face!” The creature shouted as it backed off further away from the bed. I heard the thing breathing loudly and quickly before calming down and slowly returning to the side of the bed.
Leaning over me slowly, the creature continued to look at me before softly beginning to breathe on my face. I could smell its’ foul breath even through my mask. The smell was so powerful that it took all my strength not gag as a reflex to the awful stench. In my mind I made the choice to keep motionless, and not do or say anything that could compromise whatever illusion I was giving the thing that was currently studying me. The creature breathed on me again softly. The stench I smelled from its’ breath could only be described as pure death, which only strengthened my resolve to stay perfectly motionless.
“Strange…” the thing whispered at me again, leaning in close to me to the point where I could see and smell its’ decaying flesh.
The creature slowly reached for me, its’ hand slowly moving towards my face. With every inch that decaying hand moved I couldn’t help but feel my situation becoming more and more dire. I thought that this was it for me. The creature would kill me tonight, or take me away and torture me then kill me and no one would know what happened to me. No one would find my body out here, and no one would know my story. I could feel tears start to swell up in my eyes as I thought of everyone I ever loved being yanked away from me in this one moment.
“No face, no face, no face.” The creature softly chanted as its’ hands crept ever closer to my face. I could hear the anguish in the creature’s voice as it continued chanting over and over as it reached for me.
As the creatures’ long boney hand crept only centimeters away from my face I braced myself for the worst, making the last thoughts I would ever have about the people who I loved. Just as I thought my life was all over a sudden loud noise erupted from the room, filling the ear closest to the nightstand with a flood of beeps, and causing the creature to scream and jump back. As the noise continued the creature threw itself back against the wall shrieking uncontrollably in terror as it stumbled back towards the closet. I was dumb struck for a second before the thought came to me that I had set my alarm for 4:30AM, which must have been the source of the noise.
I jumped out of the bed grabbing my phone and pointing the lit up screen at the monster as the alarm continued to ring loudly. The loud ringing caused the monster to shriek even more in confusion and terror as it retreated quicker as I approached. Seeing my chance I activated my phones flashlight and put it on strobe in order to disorientate the monster further.
“No face! No face! No face! The creature shrieked at me as it withdrew to the safety of the closet. I continued to shine my light on the creature, and for added effect I started playing loud music as I continued to jab my phone in the monsters’ direction like a lion tamer. The thing threw itself into the dark recesses of the closet and I shoved the door back locking it after I slammed it closed. The shrieks coming from the monster started to get fainter and fainter, like it was retreating deeper into the house.
“No face! No face! It has no face!” I could hear the creature yell out as it got further and further away.
After hearing the last retreating words of the thing that terrified me the whole night I bolted from the cabin at break-neck speed, jumping into my car, and floored it off the gravel road. I was shaking all over as I drove, and when I pulled my half-hole mask further down my exposed skin was as white as the snow that littered the ground. I was so frightened by the whole experience as soon as I pulled into the first town I saw, I parked my car, and began to sob uncontrollably for awhile. The experience that I had just been through would scar me for life, but as I wept in my car in the parking lot of a seven-eleven I couldn’t help but start to laugh a little in between my fits of crying. I got through my ordeal without so much as a scratch on me- well besides the mental scars- I was fine, I was alive, and I didn’t have to worry anymore.
After I finished with my whole episode of crying and laughing like an insane person I entered the store sniffling and wiping away the rest of my tears. As I continued into the store the cashier looked up at me and traced my direction with his eyes before continuing with what he was doing. The store was mostly empty, besides an elderly couple, I was the only customer in there. “Had a rough night?” The cashier said with one eyebrow cocked up while he scanned my items. “You have no idea.” I said looking out the window at the sunny winter day. “I noticed you looked a bit upset when you came in. What happened? Did you get dumped or something?” He said looking up at me as the register computed how much I owed him.
Looking at the young man behind the register, he seemed to be a little younger than I was- although that doesn’t say much because even though I’m 22 I look younger than my actual age. I looked at the cashier’s name tag for a second before feeling that I had nothing to lose by telling him about the night I just had. The small name on his ID tag read Evan, and as I finished telling him my frightening tale something odd happened. I expected him to burst out laughing or say I was the best liar he had ever talked to. Instead of doing any of that Evan just stood there, his skin milk white as he stared at me with an expression so horrified he gave me the impression that he just witnessed someone get run over by a train or something. “Evan, a-are you alright?” I said looking into his eyes while we both stood there quiet.
“W-what? Oh… Yea- it’s just…” Evan began to say before his thoughts trailed off due to the new feeling that we were both being watched. I began to feel eyes burn into the back of my head before turning around to see the old couple I glanced at when I entered the store beforehand. The old couple possessed the same horrified look that Evan had just a few seconds ago, they must have heard the whole story I told. After a few moments of silence the old couple asked me what I knew about the cabin, to which I couldn’t really say, I gave them the best description I could about what I saw. The couple proceeded to tell me about the cabin, how long it’s been there, and that it was haunted by a presence so terrifying that the place was condemned and left to rot away after so many people disappeared there. They told me that no one who ever stayed in that cabin has ever been seen alive again- if they’ve ever been seen at all after their visit.
“One of my best friends stayed the night in that cabin…” Evan said quietly as he stared off into the distance, but continued his thoughts with “I refused to go into the cabin, I knew something bad would happen if we went. I tried so hard to convince him that the dare was stupid and to not go in, but he refused to be labeled as a chicken and continued with the dare.”
Sponsored Content Is a Smoke-Free Society Within Our Grasp? Article Recommended by Evan’s eyes began to water as he continued with his story “I never saw him again after that night. I kept calling his house but his parents still couldn’t find him. We put out flyers and billboards but we never had any luck. After a few days we contacted the police and I told them about the cabin.”
Evan began to choke down tears as he clenched his fist “They found him in the basement of that cabin sprawled out on the floor. His eyes were surgically removed from his eyes sockets, his nose was removed, and his lips… they were sliced off. When they found him he was naked with an incision from the bottom of his rib cage to his pelvis down the middle of his body. All of the internal organs were extracted from his body and to add insult to injury his genitals were sliced clean off. But you want to know the worst part of it all? When the police did an autopsy on the body, they found that he was alive during the whole process.”
Evan winced as he remembered the whole gruesome site and said “they never found who, or what did it. There was no DNA evidence to convict anybody, they didn’t find the tools that made the incisions, and they didn’t find anything.”
Evan clenched his fist tighter on the table before the old man listening to our conversation put his hand on Evans shoulder to reassure him that it was going to be alright. As he comforted Evan he looked at me and said “People have been disappearing from that area for decades- maybe even centuries for all we know, but the bodies always end the same gruesome way. I don’t care who you are, no one deserves something like that happening to them. They should just torch that evil place to the ground.
The old lady joined her husbands’ side and looked at me with the most foreboding face I had ever seen. “If your story is true, you should consider yourself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth. In all my years of living you are the only one to go into that cabin and come out alive.” The woman said gripping onto her husbands’ hand tightly as she spoke to me.
After hearing the old woman’s’ words I realized that Evan said the body of his friend was found in the basement, which explains why the monsters voice got fainter. It would have pulled me into the basement if my phone hadn’t gone off. I quickly paid for my items and left the store more troubled now than I was when I entered. Feeling drowsy due to the lack of sleep and constant adrenalin rush caused by my whole terrible ordeal I decided to go to a hotel and spend the day sleeping and relaxing to get my mind off things.
That night I sat on the bed in my hotel room and looked at the 2 items that saved my life. In one hand I gripped onto my half-hole mask, which hid my face from that terrible monster. In my other hand I held my Cell phone, which scared away the horrible beast that could have killed me. I decided that from that day on I would always wear my half-hole mask to bed- it saved my life that’s the least I can do for it. The recent brush with death I just experienced had taught me that life is too precious to waste, so I decided to ask my best friend Samantha out on a date and things worked perfectly.
Samantha and I were together for 2 years before I recently asked for her hand in marriage- which she said yes. Part of me will never forget that awful night and because of it not only have I been wearing my half-hole mask to bed every night since then, I’ve also made it a priority not to live in any type of house that has a basement. I as an added safety measure I started locking every door before going to bed- it’s a pain, but you can never be too careful. Despite these crazy precautions Samantha has accepted my little quirks and has continued to be supportive as we continue or journey through life together. I couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out in my life, and I’m so lucky to be with Samantha- everything’s perfect.
There’s just one thing that bothers me- and I think I might just have to blame my imagination, but sometimes when I wake up at night, when it’s really quiet… sometimes I’ll hear soft scratching noises. Also- and I think it’s just paranoia, but I swear, sometimes I hear something whisper “No face…” From inside my closet I don’t think I’m gonna make it to the next night so just in case I don’t at least someone will know what happened to me.

2020.09.19 16:10 s810 Old Austin Tales: North Austin Meetups of Prehistoric Eras - (4000BC - 1690AD)

The folks down at the Austin History Center are slowly scanning archival photos and adding to UNT's Portal to Texas History even in these pandemic times. Among others, there are quite a few new photos of land parade floats from the early Austin Aqua Festivals in 1962 and 63. It's disappointing to see photos like this 1963 Austin Aqua Festival parade float ignorantly depicting Native Americans in a less than flattering light.
But a few of those kids dressed as stereotypical and generic 1960s natives probably had elderly relatives who remembered the time before all the tribes were ejected from this area and probably would have still thought of them as little more than savages. The photo gives context to the times in which it was taken. The Austinites of that era seem to have had less respect for those people who lived here hundreds or thousands of years before the Spanish and French started roaming around here.
As a modern Austinite I don't see why this attitude should be held up. Those were humans who lived here, if even sporadically, and loved the land and the creeks and trees as much or more than you or I. They just called the landmarks different names back then. It is known that some of the tribes who used to live around here were warlike and confrontational with other tribes. My own grandmother was born in Austin in the 1930s and often told me a tall tale about a fictional battle between the Comanche and 1000 Apache warriors in the hills near Lake Travis. (sometimes the battle took place in the area around where we were sitting in traffic depending on grandma's mood) It was a Thermopylae/Alamo-like tale of outnumbered Comanche braves winning the day by running to the hill now known as Commanche Peak and waiting in ambush. But grandma often told some whoppers and that was surely one of them. I've never read about even the scantest evidence that something like that took place here, if even only in oral histories of the tribes involved. But who knows. My point is we really don't know a whole lot about what the people who lived here before everything, and what they did while they were here.
Today I wanted to share some small bit of the real story of these people who lived here when real estate was free if you could keep it from the wild beasts or competing tribes. Because the real story, from what little we know of it, is really just as captivating as Grandma's tall tales were.
On a related note I recently discovered the AustinFound podcast from Michael Barnes and a few other folks at The Statesman. They've been writing the good historyposts on The Statesman's Austin360.com for a while now under the same name and I've referenced them a lot here before. Michael Barnes knows his stuff. He has written a multi-volume book set called Indelible Austin and was one of the people who went on the expedition to look for traces of the 1730 Spanish mission set up somewhere in this area. In episodes 1, 6, and 27 of the podcast he talks about the three main native tribes in this area: The Apache, who considered this area the northeastern border of their roaming grounds and had mostly vacated by the 1800s, the Comanche, who were descended from the Apache (edit: fixed) Wyoming Shoshone tribe long ago in modern Utah and Wyoming and considered this area the southeastern border of their expanding roaming grounds, and the Tonkawa tribe, who were also war like but had a different culture and their own ways. They especially were early victims of the diseases brought by european contact.
One thing I agree with Michael Barnes about is how The Tonkawa, despite having more of a territorial claim to the area Austin is in now than the other two tribes, are under-represented in the old chronicles written down by early white settlers. The Comanche are namedropped in the written accounts of the 1800s quite a bit for their 'depredations' on early settlers. It was the Comanche were the only tribe in this region who, for a time, rebuffed all attempts to subjugate them from Spain, Mexico, and Anglos. But the Tonkawa, on the other hand, being so few in number had to ally themselves with whites against the other two tribes. Because of this they were westernized quickly and assumed a sort of sub-caste in frontier society. Early accounts refer to them as 'Tonks' and talk in exaggerated ways about their cannibalism and wolf-worship. From what I understand the people eating only took place after winning a great battle. The tribe has a website nowadays where you can learn about their culture, their colorful traditional clothing and how it was made, and the Trail of Tears out of Central Texas.
It's not often talked about what tribes were here before the Tonkawa and the Comanche and Apache. It's a topic I'm always looking to learn more about. If you've lived here a while you might have heard of the Leanderthal Lady. Her remains are estimated to be between 10000 and 13000 years old and according to this article was found with buried with a shark tooth. I've also talked about the digs at the Westcave Preserve near Hamilton Pool, and the Levi and Smith Rock Shelters, where evidence of human habitation dates back 10000 years at least. But that brings up the question: Who lived in the area in between then and the time of the Tonkawa? I know there are stories from early settlers about an 'Indian Village' of an unnamed tribe very near the old Santa Monica Springs on the Colorado River but that's about it. Well thanks to some archeological digs over the years when new stuff had been built we know about a few frequent party spots some of the people alive back then liked to congregate in. I've found archeological reports from three separate digs in spots around North Austin, which is fine because the good rock shelters appear to have been in what is now South Austin anyway...
Let's start in the order the reports were made. The first concerns a site where people camped repeatedly over the course of the last 4000 years that today lies in a neighborhood near the intersection of North Lamar and Braker Lane. Back in the neighborhood is a street called Jetta Court. This neighborhood dates back to the mid to late 1960s and when built the area was already known for arrowhead deposits. In the 1980s further digs established the whole area around where Walnut Creek Park is today was once a major habitation area. But back in '68 the home builder company was partially done with the neighborhood and paid for a salvage dig after reports of trespassers "pothunting".
The report from the salvage dig was published in the Bulletin of the Texas Archeological Society, Volume 47, 1976 and is available in the UNT archive. You can read the whole thing if you feel like getting into the weeds. Quoting the abstract and introduction:
During the course of several weekends in 1968 and 1969, students from The University of Texas at Austin carried out test excavations at the Jetta Court site in Travis County, central Texas. These investigations constituted a salvage effort designed to obtain information on this site before it was destroyed by construction activities in a housing development. The terrace deposits at Jetta Court yielded a long Archaic sequence, including a deeply buried occupation which occurred stratigraphically below Early Archaic materials. The results of the excavations are described, and detailed analyses of the lithic debris and faunal re mains are presented.
The Jetta Court site (41 TV 151) is located within the city limits of Austin, Texas, buried in terrace deposits on the west side of Walnut Creek (Figs. 1-3). The site was brought to the attention of the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory (TARL) of The University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 1968 by reports of pothunting in an area slated for a housing subdivision. Inspection of the site by TARL personnel indicated that it should be tested before the planned construction activities were begun.
Excavations, directed by graduate students in anthropology at The University of Texas at Austin, were carried out with volunteer help. Work was done on weekends during a period from December, 1968, to February, 1969. Since the site was unprotected during the week, numerous instances of vandalism occurred. One unit of excavation was eventually ruined, but the others were not seriously damaged. This combination of weekend excavation and weekday vandalism limited effective investigation to stratigraphic testing and backhoe trenching. Exposures of horizontal tracts were not done partly be- cause of fear that it would lead to more extensive depredations on the part of the pothunters, and partly because the site was considerably deeper than was anticipated.
The writers would like to acknowledge the assistance and under- standing of Mr. Cecil Lamour, representing Conann Construction, Inc., in permitting the excavations. His patience with our backhoe operations, in particular, was most helpful.
How dramatic. Apparently someone thought there was buried treasure nearby. I wonder what could have given them that idea.. Here's a photo of the site at the time and Here's a map of the dig site with the holes marked. All of this area is built over today.
The dig was done hastily and the vandalism limited the findings. The report goes on describe two burned rock midden sites located within the boundaries of the dig. These were like old campfires that had been repeatedly built over for a number of years during two different eras.
Some further highlights from the report:
Here's a photo of the one of the holes.
There are a couple of photos of some of the lithic projectile points found in the upper, newer rock midden. Here's one. Here's another. And a couple from the lower, older midden. Here's one from the lower and here's another. There are many more photos and charts showing the finds, their classifications, and their locations in relation to one another in the layered deposits. This is how most of the rest of the report goes.
There were many animal bones and shells found in some areas indicating people ate there, or used the site for industry. Here a list of animal species found in the bones they can identify. On the menu: snails, turtles, opossum, coyote, deer, bison, cow, a couple of kinds of rabbits and mice, and strangely gophers. Apparently there used to be gophers around here when the climate favored grasslands over forests.
The distribution of animal bones is nicely charted here in size and age, Category A being the largest animals like bison and Category C being the smallest, such as rats and snails. The report notes that remains of small animals would degrade faster so that might skew the results.
To sum it all up because it's way too long to copypaste, the two burned rock middens at Jetta Court don't contribute a whole lot of new information to the story besides offering evidence that the spot was a place for habitation. I think if I understand it correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) the lower midden dates back over 3000 years while the upper midden dates back about 2000 years. The report talks about not knowing how to classify the artifacts within the archaic period. It recommends further digs in the area but acknowledges that's probably not possible with the neighborhood going up. What the writers didn't know is that just a few years later digs would begin at many different sites in what is now Walnut Creek Park that further expanded the knowledge of that area and its earliest inhabitants.
Moving on to the next site, which lies a little bit east of there at what became the Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farm, once an actual farm near Sprinkle now turned into a live action museum exhibit by the city which is beloved by schoolkids on field trips. It turns out that when the farm was built in the 1850s, part of the property contained a much older camp site that was favored by natives a thousand years ago. A report was written in 1994 about a dig in 1983. (PDF warning). The site of the native cultural deposits was at the southern end of the farm. Here is a map of the site in relation to the farm.
The PDF isn't as copypaste friendly as the other UNT article but it's short and I can summarize the findings. It's really more of just an abstract compared to the other long report. It's worth taking the time to read if you can handle PDFs and you're interested in the history of the area at all. In the introduction they describe how the farm was bought by the Heritage Society of Austin in the 1950s and belonged to the City of Austin by 1980 as part of the same deal that established Walnut Creek Park. More than a few digs had been done in the area around there in the early 1980s. It describes 22 different ancient burials found at one nearby site. At the farm site itself there was a deposit of projectile points over a meter thick of most types found in the area during the archaic era.
That brings us to the third site. called Millican Bench. Never heard of it? Me neither. It's a tiny spot just south of The Arboretum today that was obliterated by the construction of Loop 360 in the 1970s. Before the highway cut through the site, TxDot conducted a dig in 1970 and 71 on a small limestone plateau (thus the bench) where artifacts had been reported by the previous landowner. The report on the site dig is another PDF, but it was written in 2003, is very detailed, and will let me copypaste from it. Here's a map of the site showing where it was in the roadbed of modern Loop 360.
Quoting from the introduction:
Located in Travis County, the Millican Bench site(41TV163) was the first archeological site excavated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT; then Texas Highway Department) as a mitigation effort for highway construction under the requirements of the National Environmental Protection Act of 1966. The excavation was conducted between September of 1970 and February of 1971under the direction of Frank Weir, then of the Texas Highway Department. In August of 2002, TxDOT contracted with the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (Work Authorization#57014PD004) to conduct an inventory and assessment of the archeological collections and documentation associated with site 41TV163, develop possible research questions that could be pursued with the site data, and to prepare the project material for permanent curation. Based on that assessment(Mahoney et al. 2003a), and following consultation with TxDOT, CAR further was directed to produce a final report. This document constitutes the final report on the TxDOT work at 41TV163. Included in this report are a description of the site, excavation procedures, and an analysis of selected components of the data collected over three decades ago.
To report on excavations and analyze data collected over30 years ago presents several challenges. Foremost among these is that if one wishes to avoid a primarily historical perspective, data collected using earlier field methods to investigate earlier theoretical concerns must be molded to address current questions. In this case, the disconnect between the theoretical and methodological considerations that guided the excavation of 41TV163, which appear to have been focused on chronology and cultural history, and current research interests in Texas archeology is exacerbated by the loss of a large portion of the field notes, some photo logs, and some of the artifacts and samples during the intervening years. Nevertheless, in the assessment document (Mahoney et al. 2003a), we identified a series of current research issues that could be addressed using data generated by the work at 41TV163. These include investigating temporal changes in subsistence patterns and changes in lithic technology. In addition, we investigate several aspects of site use during the Late Prehistoric occupation of 41TV163.
So what this is saying is that basically the original field work and notes were lost and they had to reconstruct everything. I guess they thought it was worth it in scientific value to reconstruct or else maybe because it was the forerunner to TxDot's first dig. In any case the findings showed evidence of habitation a bit later than the other sites to the east. The intro continues:
Initially, seven discrete areas, designated A through G, were identified at Millican Bench. Figure 1-2 (the map linked earlier) presents a section of an aerial photo with the sketched locations of these seven areas, along with the Loop 360 center line. The photo appears to have been created at the time of the fieldwork. Area A consisted of a burned rock midden located on a topographic bench. Another probable burned rock midden, Area B, was situated on the slope and creek terrace below the bench.Located just to the west of Area B were two other areas, designated C and D. These appeared to be occupation areas with burned rock and other debris present. Three additional areas, designated E, F, and G, were located across the creek east of Areas A–D. Area E was a burned rock midden that measured approximately four meters in diameter. Area F contained a concentration of occupation refuse with burned rock and chipped stone, while Area G was a broad bedrock exposure containing scattered chipped stone debris. With the exception of Area G, where only surface collection was conducted, all areas (A through F) had some level of excavation. At 41TV163, TxDOT personnel recorded 11features, including a human burial (Feature 10) and a possible structure (Feature 3). In addition, more than 200cores, 1,400 tools, 400 projectile points, and 42,500 pieces of debitage were collected. With the exception of any evidence for Paleo-indian occupation, the 41TV163 materials seem to reflect most prehistoric periods. Collected projectile point types thought to be diagnostic include Wells, Early Split Stem, Early Triangular, Martindale, and Uvalde forms dating to much of the Early Archaic (8000–6000 BP); Nolan,Travis, and a single Andice point, all dating to the Middle Archaic (6000–4000 BP); Bulverde, Pedernales, Williams,Lange, Marshall, Montell, Castroville, Ensor, Frio, Fairland, and Darl forms dating throughout the Late Archaic (4000–1250 BP); and Scallorn points, dating to the early portion of the Late Prehistoric (1250–700 BP). A small amount of historic and/or modern material was also collected, though it is not considered in any detail in this report.
Long story short, this area was frequently visited from about 4000BC-1300AD, mostly toward the latter date, and shows different patterns in habitation indicating the different tribal customs in use at that point. In addition to rock middens and lots of projectile points and rock flakes, an ancient human burial was found. Also many animal bones like the other sites indicating different eating areas.
Well there you have a few stories of the people who lived here before recorded history. I hope one day more local history writers and bloggers can address this topic in more depth than I have time for here today. I know there are a lot of people out there like me who would love to know more. Time is way short so I've got to wrap this up quick. I obviously don't have any related photos from prehistory but have some newly added old Aqua Fest photos from the UNT archive for Bonus Pics today.

2020.09.18 16:47 BuckRowdy [Update] The rise and fall and the depths of depravity of pedophile Jared Fogle from Subway.

This is an updated and edited version of a post I originally submitted at /redditcrimecommunity. It's been updated with the latest info.
I used to be kind of obsessed with the idea of Jared from Subway. He always seemed like nothing more than wallpaper in a commercial, a guy whose job amounted to holding up a comically giant pair of pants for seconds at a time in commercials. How much do you think they paid that guy to do that?
I used to search to see if I could find out Jared's salary or his net worth because to me it seemed like he had the easiest job in the world. Just stand there and smile, hold up the giant pants, shake a few kids hands at store openings and other corporate promotional events; essentially play the character of Jared from the Subway commercials.
The Midwestern everyman who once weighed over 425 pounds and lost it all by eating at Subway every day. Of course the fine print at the bottom of the screen gave the wider context to his weight loss routine, but there was a much wider, much darker context to Jared's story that would only be revealed years later.
Jared started working for Subway in 2000. By 2005 they had stopped featuring him in commercials and their sales declined by 10%. They quickly reinstated him and he was a fixture ever since.
It is true that Jared did lose the weight, and he did do it in part by eating at Subway.
At this point it would be reasonable to ask how did he get the money as a college student to eat all his meals at Subway?
Because he was running a porn video rental business out of his apartment at the time and had an extensive collection. You've got to remember that this was in an era where media of all types was more difficult to obtain. You didn't have everything at your fingertips back then.
Subway opened up on the ground floor and Jared was lazy so he started eating all his meals there.
The rest of Jared's story is marketing mythology. A friend wrote an article in the student newspaper that got published in Men's Health which caught the eye of Subway's marketing department. Jared started working for Subway in 2000 and up until about 2007 it appeared to be a marketing master stroke. That's when the reports started trickling out. In 2007, TMZ published the story about the porn rental business.
We'd learn later that as early as 2008, Subway had received serious reports about Jared from a franchisee in Florida that Jared had befriended at a few store openings. Cindy Mills, the franchisee said:
"He would just tell me he really liked them young," she says. Fogle and Mills had a sexual relationship, which lead Fogle to disclose disturbing details of his criminal activity in lewd text messages.
Mills says she tried to blow the whistle by phoning ad executive Jeff Moody — then CEO of the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust (SFAFT) — after Fogle had told her that he had sex both in Thailand and the US with child prostitutes between the ages of 9 and 16 years old. According to Mills, Moody stopped her mid-conversation and said, "Don't worry, he has met someone. She is a teacher and he seems to love her very much, and we think she will help keep him grounded." Mills also claims she spoke with two more SFAFT execs after Moody, but ran into more dead ends.
Jared was up to no good for years, but his world really started to crumble in 2015 with the arrest of Russell Taylor. Taylor was Jared's partner in his non-profit charity and he was just as bad as Jared if not worse.
Russell Taylor, the former director of Fogle's anti-childhood obesity foundation, was arrested in April [of 2015] on three counts of possession of child pornography, three counts of child exploitation, and three counts of voyeurism.
Taylor had gotten in trouble for texting a woman a picture of bestiality and suggesting such between the two of them. It's a sick thing to think about, but that's just what Jared and Russell were up to.
In one of those text messages, according to the affidavit, “Russell Taylor asked her if he and another adult female she identified could come to Jane Doe’s residence and engage in” an act of bestiality. The woman did not agree to that request, but told investigators “you could tell (Taylor) was serious.” She also told investigators that “she received an image file via text from Russell Taylor that depicted (another act of bestiality).”
Jared's house was raided and the rest quickly became history. Subway dropped him. Sharknado 3 dropped him. Jared accused Taylor of fraud and sued him. One quarter of the funds of the charity were unaccounted for, and the only money they ever paid out went to Taylor's $73k salary.
I'm no professional but it's hard not to draw the conclusion that Jared was paying Taylor to produce child porn with a non profit charity.
The world found out about Jared in 2015, but in 2007 and 2008 two women were finding out a lot about Jared.
Jared had met a franchisee in Florida and started a sexual relationship with her. She called the FBI when Jared started texting stuff like this:
In one series of texts sent from April 2008, Fogle tries to convince the franchisee, a woman, to advertise herself for sex on Craigslist. She could make $500 per act he explains and he could watch her have sex with other men. Fogle then goes on to apparently admit to paying for sex with a 16-year-old girl off Craigslist.
The woman franchisee writes: "Is this the same website you found that 16 year old you that you f---ed?" the woman replied, according to an affadavit.
  • "I still can't believe you only paid $100 for her."
  • Fogle reponds: "It was amazing!!!!"
  • "What part of her ad made you think she was selling sex?" the woman asked.
  • Fogle says "U will have to read them to see."
The woman got a lawyer and submitted the texts to Subway who sat on them.
Around the same time, Jared met Rochelle Herman Walrond, a journalist who initially remained anonymous, who came forward and said that she got suspicious about Jared when he called middle school girls hot
According to the woman, Jared would often visit schools in Sarasota County, and allegedly told her numerous times that, 'Middle school girls are hot.'"
She contacted the FBI who asked her to wear a wire. She went on to record Jared over a nearly 5 year period, pleading with the FBI to go ahead and arrest him with them always saying that they didn't have enough evidence and needed more.
So she tried to get Jared to incriminate himself. Over that 4.5 year period they talked about a lot of stuff, like that Jared wanted to fly to Thailand to have sex with children.
"I would fly all three of us clear across the world if we need to,"[Jared] says on the tape. "It would just make things a lot easier — if we're going to try and get some young kids with us. It would be a lot easier probably."
He gave her grooming tips:
"Well, if we get them segregated out ... you know, start talking or whatever ... and we get a little closer, and a little closer and a little closer and before you know it ... it just starts to happen," the man's voice says. "But I think that girl from the broken home could be a possibility, you know."
He daydreamed on the phone:
"Do you want to watch me f— a young girl, too?" the voice of Fogle asks. "Will you f— a young boy?" When Herman-Walrond asks if that would turn Fogle on, he responds with a whispered "yeah."
“I had a little boy. It was amazing,” Fogle reportedly said, in response to a question about being with children. “It just felt so good. I mean, it felt—it felt so good.”
He also, allegedly, asked her repeatedly to let him install hidden cameras in her kids’ rooms.
“I had two young children at the time, and he talked to me about installing hidden cameras in their rooms and asked me if I would choose which child I would like him to watch,” she told Inside Edition.
The audio recordings can be heard at this link. She reported him to Subway in 2009 and nothing happened.
At the same time this was happening, Jared was flying to New York to pay for sex with minors. He asked the minors who he paid for sex if they knew anyone else they could recommend, always stressing younger if possible.
Also, according to the charging documents:
Fogle received "images and videos of nude of partially clothed minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct," which were allegedly recorded by Russell Taylor, the former director of the Jared Foundation.
Taylor secretly filmed some of the minors in his home using hidden cameras that captured them changing clothes and bathing.
Taylor was in possession of 400 videos of child pornography upon his arrest.
In 2011, someone else reported Jared to Subway via their website and yet nothing happened.
All this came raining down on Jared in 2015 when his house was raided and he was arrested and later charged with 14 acts of sex involving minors. He was ultimately sentenced to 15 years in jail and had to pay restitution to his 14 of his many victims totaling $1.4 million. His wife divorced him as quick as she could, Subway cut ties with him and the dominoes started to tumble.
All of a sudden the past reports about Jared came to light and Subway didn't have an explanation. Lawsuits started flying. Jared's now ex wife accused Subway of covering up Jared's pedophilia even from her because their marriage made Jared more grounded and more marketable.
It's now a sick joke, but at the same time of jared's arrest, Subway was trying to rebrand him as a family man.
So why didn't Subway act on the various reports it had gotten about Jared over the years? As this site puts it, it was a story bookended by laziness. Jared's laziness brought him to Subway, and their laziness in vetting stories led to the end of the Jared era with a lot of human misery left in his wake.
Subway has waffled in its response. Rather than taking the path of clear messaging and communication, and aiming to transparent and authentic throughout this terrible situation for the victims and Fogle’s family (as well as the brand), the company hasn’t been clear about where it stands in the midst of this crisis. What message was Subway sending to its employees and franchisees by keeping Fogle around for as long as it did?
As soon as he went to jail he instantly gained 30 pounds
In 2016, he filed an appeal which was denied. The DA's office argued:
[that] Fogle's text messages to a woman, in which Fogle stated he would "pay big" if she could procure 14-year-old children, and that he "craved" underage Asian girls. In these text messages, he also expressed sexual interest in young boys, although there is to date no evidence that he paid for sex with male children.
Later that same year, a brawl broke out and Jared was nearly killed in an attack meant to send a message to all pedophiles.
Other than that, rumor has it that Jared has it pretty easy in jail which is disappointing to hear given all that he's responsible for.
In 2017, Fogle tried to pull the Sovereign Citizen defense and claim that the feds didn't have jurisdiction over him which I imagine gave the feds a good laugh. The motion was dismissed.
In 2018, Jared sued to void his conviction going so far as to name the president (among others) as a defendant. It was unclear how the president was involved and Jared was forced to remove him as a defendant.
He claimed:
he was wrongfully allowed to plead guilty to conspiracy to receive child pornography, claiming that conspiracy doesn’t apply to such an offense.
His suit was dismissed.
That same year a woman pen pal of Jared's sold their racy letters to Radar Online. Seen here and here. She also sold a recorded phone call where she and Jared discuss porn and his sexual preferences.
If he wanted to appeal to a parole board, surely sending hand-drawn pictures of his genitalia that later end up on radar online is not a good strategy.
In March 2020, three of associate Russell Taylor's child pornography convictions were overturned for ineffective counsel. He still faces trial on 9 other charges.
In the five years since Fogle was arrested, Subway has been reeling. In 2015, their co-founder passed away and a new CEO was brought in. Internal reports indicate that customer traffic is down 30%. They've laid off over 400 people from the corporate HQ and this summer they had to revoke a promotion due to a franchisee revolt over the pricing.
Subway was associated so long with Jared it may take time for customers to form a new association. They tried to drop him once, struggled, and re-hired him. Clearly Subway lived in denial while Jared was their spokesman and looked the other way as business boomed. The new marketing strategy involves athletes. Time will only tell if they can recover from one of the worst scandals to ever hit a sandwich chain.
As of September 2020, Russell Taylor was being held at a federal prison in Yazoo City, Mississippi; Fogle was being held at a federal prison in Littleton, Colorado.

2020.09.17 17:45 ketchupsunshine As requested: Paula Abdul claims a 1992 plane crash took her out of the spotlight. The NTSB has no record of it ever happening.

On the Paula Abdul post a couple weeks ago, I commented that I had a write-up that was almost ready to go. This goes far more in depth than that post and was heavily requested so hopefully it does not get removed this time.
In July I saw this comment and decided to look up the plane crash story, expecting it to be easily explainable one way or another. But instead I wound up with differing accounts from Paula Abdul herself, articles claiming she was lying, and lots of random gossip. So I figured I’d try to piece it together myself.
The story goes like this:
In 1992 1, Paula Abdul was flying from a performance in St. Louis to Denver while on her Under My Spell Tour (sometimes called the “Spellbound” tour, the name of the album she was promoting at this time). Then, over a cornfield in Iowa, Abdul in 2019 said the following took place:
“It all happened when I boarded a seven-seater plane and an hour into the flight one of the engines blew up and the right wing caught fire and everything went black...I woke up in the hospital only to find that I had crushed my cervical spine, leaving me partially paralyzed.”
She also stated that she underwent 15 spinal surgeries as a result of her injuries both from this and prior incidents.
But 2019 was not the first time she told this story. According to Abdul in 2005, she took one day off and she continued to perform. The 2005 account mostly matched her earliest mention of the accident in 2003. Then, in 2019, she described waking up in the hospital, partially paralyzed. The story changes in bits every time, and there is no documented mention of it at all before Abdul’s 2003 NBC interview. It’s stranger the more you read about it, and there don’t seem to be concrete answers.
What we do know for sure is that Paula Abdul’s career took a hit shortly after the time she claims the crash took place. Abdul’s next era following Spellbound, Head Over Heels, was her worst selling release. She was divorced twice between 1994 and 1998. Between her Spellbound era and about 1996, Abdul seemed to stay out of the spotlight. Part of this was due to her seeking treatment for her bulimia in 1994, which came with rumors that she was being treated for opioid addiction at the same time. Her career and personal life seemed to have gone downhill after her Under Your Spell tour, and it’s debated whether this was because of her plane crash, or whether the plane crash was invented to sweep this under the rug.

Inconsistencies:

There are a few aspects of Abdul’s story that are pointed to as proof that she is lying.
Dates:
Abdul claims to have performed in St. Louis before the fateful flight, heading to Denver, and to have boarded immediately following this performance. Her own website does not list a St. Louis tour date (although there is a date for Greenwood Village, near Denver, on June 10, 1992). The Wikipedia page for the tour uses the same dates as Abdul’s website. This has been used by some theorists as proof that the whole story is fabricated, since it gives the appearance that there wouldn’t have been a St. Louis to Denver flight at all. However, while Abdul’s own website lacks any mention of these dates, there is some evidence she may have flown from St. Louis to Denver between June 19 and June 22, 1992. 2 Rich Juzwiak at Jezebel dug up records that give us a possible date for the alleged crash. The Jezebel article cites a St. Louis Post Dispatch article from June 21, 1992, talking about a Paula Abdul concert the previous Friday at the Riverport Ampitheater. This sets a date of June 19, 1992 for St. Louis. The same Jezebel article also cites an Entertainment Weekly article from September 25, 1992, which refers to Abdul performing a show at the Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in a suburb of Denver on June 22. Abdul’s website lists no shows between the June 10 show in Greenwood Village and the June 23 show in Seattle. This means that there is a gap that these other two shows fit into, although it is odd they aren’t listed as part of the tour despite being part of the tour.
EDIT: As referenced in footnote 2, the Jezebel article had an edit claiming that a reader had found a Kansas City Star article listing a June 20, 1992 date at the Sandstone Ampitheater in Bonner Springs, outside of Kansas City. I couldn't find this as I was writing, but u/bookdrops dug up this Springfield News-Leader article from June 19, 1992 that references the same June 20 date at the Sandstone Ampitheater. This means that there was a date between the St. Louis and Denver shows that have been found, and to me this rules out there being a St. Louis to Denver flight at all. She could have mistaken Kansas City for St. Louis or misremembered, but her stated flight path doesn't seem to have happened.
Possible drug addiction:
Abdul’s 2009 Ladies Home Journal interview describes her spending Thanksgiving 2008 weaning herself off of a painkiller addiction:
The rumors that her sometimes-bizarre behavior was fueled by drugs just may have been true. Abdul was taking heavy-duty pain killers, though she claims she never shot an Idol episode under the influence. But last Thanksgiving, determined to overcome her habit, she checked into the La Costa Resort and Spa, in Carlsbad, California, to wean herself off her medications in one fell swoop. "I could have killed myself.... Withdrawal -- it's the worst thing," she says. "I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain, it was excruciating. But at my very core, I did not like existing the way I had been.”
Fans and tabloids during Abdul’s run as an American Idol judge often commented on her strange behavior, although she was quick to explain it away. The LHJ interview had direct quotes from her talking about her struggle with drug addiction.
...And then Paula Abdul went on record saying she had never said those things. In fact, according to her, she has never even been drunk. Abdul does not seem to have refuted that she went to a place called La Costa in Carlsbad, California, but she was adamant that it was just a normal spa and she had been there for only three days. While there is a rehab center in Carlsbad called La Costa, the article refers to “La Costa Resort and Spa”, which is an actual resort and spa.
Despite Abdul’s denials, there is still rampant speculation that she is or was addicted to painkillers. There’s certainly no clear-cut evidence proving she was ever an addict, but it’s also nearly impossible to disprove something. Especially when there is so much circumstantial evidence, such as her “strange” behavior that the tabloids latched onto.
Worth noting for this point is the fact that Abdul has consistently been open about her diagnosis with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, an incredibly painful condition. This, in conjunction with her (also consistent) story about a cheerleading accident in high school followed by several smaller car accidents over the years, means that Paula Abdul already has a pretty good reason to be using painkillers. RSD and any severe chronic pain can sometimes also cause people to seem “spacey” or “loopy”, which could also explain why so many people thought she was acting strange during the time she was on American Idol.
Crash records:
The strongest piece of evidence cited by those who believe Paula Abdul is lying is the lack of evidence. There seems to be no record of this crash ever having happened. Her tour ran from October 1991 to August 1992 and despite having searched accident records 3 for that timespan I have been unable to find any record of this crash. I’ll admit to not being knowledgeable about aviation records, but it also seems telling that no one else has been able to find these records either. Abdul has denounced those who doubt her claims and while I can’t speak definitively, I would think she or her publicist would have pointed to an NTSB report if there was one.
Additionally, Abdul has been quoted several times as saying the plane landed in a cornfield in Iowa. This doesn’t fit with her claim that the flight was from St. Louis to Denver. The flight she claims to have taken is pretty much straight west, and crashing in Iowa would require a significant detour north. Not impossible, but certainly implausible at least from a layman’s understanding of air travel.
There is an NTSB report for an eight seater (not seven) plane crashing into a field in Nebraska (not Iowa), a full month before the Under My Spell tour began. It also seems to have taken off in Nebraska with an intended destination elsewhere in Nebraska, rather than going to either St. Louis or Denver, and it crashed shortly after takeoff rather than the claimed forty minutes to an hour into the flight. I cannot find any news about what Abdul would’ve been doing in Nebraska in September 1991, so I don’t believe this is the accident. There is also a record of an accident in Englewood, Colorado on June 10, 1992. Paula Abdul had a concert in nearby Greenwood Village on the same day, but the description of the plane and accident do not match her story at all. These two are the only records that I have seen that match any part of her story, and neither is a good fit.

Theories:

Theory 1: Paula Abdul was actually in some sort of incident on a plane in 1992, but has embellished what happened and this is why no one has been able to track down records of the event. The most common theory in this camp is that the plane experienced some turbulence, she wasn’t wearing her seatbelt, and she experienced an injury. This possibly compounded with previous injuries (such as the cheerleading accident she often mentions in conjunction with the plane crash story) and caused severe harm, but the plane did not crash. There’s a lot of overlap between this theory and the others, and how much overlap exists between theories depends on who you ask.
Theory 2: Paula Abdul was not in any aviation accidents in 1992 and she is using this story to cover up painkiller use and/or her extended absence from the limelight before her American Idol job.
One of these theories revolves around the idea that Paula invented the plane crash in 2003, after regaining the limelight as an American Idol judge, to give herself an excuse for falling out of the public eye and to distract from the downturn in her career and personal life during this period. The other, more popular theory, is that she used the plane crash as an excuse to either explain away her loopy behavior during her American Idol years as non-drug related (if you believe 2005 USA Today “I have never been addicted to anything” Paula Abdul) or to excuse it as being caused by medication prescribed to her for her injuries.
Theory 3: Paula Abdul is telling the truth about being in a crash and her story was brought into doubt due to some unfortunate gaps in information, such as the NTSB records being incomplete/the accident not being reported at all, her own choice to keep quiet for an extended period of time, and miscommunications about whether or not she was using pain medication. There is enough room for the basic story to be true. Admittedly, the story has changed so much that at least some versions will be lies even if one version was the truth. If this is the case I will certainly apologize for fueling speculation otherwise...but I would consider this the least likely option.

Conclusion/discussion:

Regardless of whatever the actual story is regarding the plane crash, it’s pretty clear that Paula Abdul struggles with chronic pain and I do not intend to make light of this at all or to shame her if she has struggled with addiction. It’s just very strange that there is no proof of this event ever happening. Did Paula Abdul get injured on a plane in 1992? Was she covering for a painkiller addiction, and was that part of why she went to rehab in 1994? Was she covering for being out of the spotlight? Is Paula Abdul actually sober like she claims, and is her strange behavior actually just her being Paula Abdul rather than drugs or alcohol? Was this a ploy for attention that ripped off of Gloria Estefan’s accident? Why did it take eleven years after the alleged accident for there to be a single documented mention of it? I’m very curious what everyone else thinks about this case.
My personal theory (which is based as much on gut feelings as it is on actual information, since the info is so spotty) is that she was on a plane during the Under My Spell tour, wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, and was injured when the plane experienced turbulence mid-flight. This compounded her existing spinal injuries and her condition deteriorated for several years until around 1994 her health problems prevented her from working. She took a break from the limelight to recover, came back for American Idol, and decided to embellish her story to garner sympathy and distract from the other issues (the relative commercial failure of Head Over Heels, her divorces) that contributed to her break. I’m unsure on whether or not she had an addiction to painkillers but I lean towards “no”. Her story of using alternative medicine in response to her injuries from the crash partially convinced me that the strange behavior people point to as proof of her being on drugs is actually just her being herself. She seems like a bit of an odd duck.

Footnotes:

1 Some articles list 1993 as the date of the crash, including some quotes from Abdul herself, but in the grand scheme of things this did not seem particularly significant. The tour she mentions ran from 1991 to 1992, and most articles state 1992. Because of this I am assuming that this is a mistake rather than an actual lie. Specifically the 2009 Ladies Home Journal interview says she was in a car accident in 1992 that caused a neck injury, and places the plane crash in 1993. This is the closest thing to a “contradictory” date I have seen but it also is not a quote from Paula Abdul herself. Make of this what you will.
2 According to an edit in the Jezebel story, there was a Kansas City Star article claiming Abdul had performed in Kansas City on June 20, 1992, which would basically rule out a St. Louis to Denver flight. However, I’ve tried searching and can’t find this article. If anyone is able to find it I’d be happy to edit it in, but I’m not including information I can’t verify. EDIT: Link to confirmation of Sandstone Amphitheater concert, so there is now proof of this and I have edited the post accordingly.
3 This specific link has a disclaimer that records have only been natively uploaded since 1996. So although there are pre-1996 records available on this site, there is no guarantee that these records are complete. The other link provided does not contain the same disclaimer and has far more complete records, but I have no way to verify that they are 100% complete.

A stubborn Vicky resists increasing shear

Hurricane Teddy continues to impart strengthening southwesterly to westerly shear onto Vicky this morning, causing the cyclone to become considerably weaker and shallower in vertical structure. Animated infrared imagery depicts a significant decrease in convective development, with whatever remains of the cyclone's thunderstorm activity becoming sparse and spread out across the cyclone's shallow and broad circulation. Vicky continues to produce robust poleward outflow; however, the strengthening flow from the southwest continues to choke off Vicky's equatorward outflow.
Intensity estimates derived from satellite imagery analysis and recent scatterometer data indicates that Vicky has weakened into a tropical depression, with maximum one-minute sustained winds decreasing to 30 knots (55 kilometers per hour). The increasingly shallow cyclone is now moving westward under the steering influence of the low-level easterlies.
Latest data NHC Advisory #14 11:00 AM AST (15:00 UTC)
Current location: 21.4°N 38.2°W 917 miles (1476 km) WNW of Mindelo, Cabo Verde

Forecast discussion

Last updated: Thursday, 17 September 2020 - 11:00 AM AST (15:00 UTC)

Vicky should degenerate into a remnant low tonight

Strengthening shear is expected to strip Vicky of whatever remains of its deep convection by this evening, causing the cyclone to degenerate into a remnant low. Vicky should continue to drift toward the west to west-northwest over the next couple of days until its low-level circulation unravels into an open trough and dissipates.

2020.09.12 06:07 assessment_bot [ Fatal(1) ] [ 08/26/2020 ] Cessna T210, Peyton/ CO

On August 26, 2020, about 1137 mountain daylight time, a Cessna T210N airplane, N64EM, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Peyton, Colorado. The private pilot sustained fatal injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
According to initial information, between about 0830 and 0930, the airplane was flown in the airport traffic pattern at the Meadow Lake Airport (FLY), near Colorado Springs, Colorado. About 1011, the pilot flew the airplane about 20 minutes from FLY to the City of Colorado Springs Municipal Airport (COS), near Colorado Springs, Colorado, for service to the airplane's oxygen system. About 1125, the airplane departed COS on a return flight to FLY.
During the return flight, a flight instructor who was providing instruction in a slower airplane in the pattern at FLY stated that he remembered the accident airplane getting in between the airplane he was in and another slower airplane that was in trail for a landing on runway 33. The instructor felt that there was not much separation between the airplanes. The student and instructor turned the airplane from the base leg onto final and thought the accident airplane extended its downwind to make some room between the slower airplanes. After the student and instructor landed their airplane, they heard that the accident airplane had crashed south of the runway. The instructor turned around and saw plumes of black smoke and the student called 911.
The pilot in the slower trailing airplane stated that the accident airplane entered on the downwind between his airplane and the instructor's and student pilot's airplane. He saw that the accident airplane flew an extended downwind leg and overshot the runway while turning final. A crosswind was present relative to runway 33. The accident airplane increased its bank during that turn to final and pitched up. The accident airplane then impacted terrain, a "puff" of white smoke was observed, then a "fire ball", and black smoke. The airplane nosed over following the impact. The pilot said that the accident pilot made all "proper" radio calls without any mention of malfunctions and did not declare an emergency.
A witness near the accident site said that he saw the airplane's wings "wiggle" and thought that the airplane was going to crash. The airplane then nosed down and impacted terrain. The airplane was about 30 to 50 ft up in the air when it nosed down. The airplane dropped "straight" in. There was no fire or smoke from the airplane when it was in the air. The witness did not hear any engine "sounds". The nose landing gear separated on impact, bounced, and it came to rest by a fence line. The airplane slid on the ground from its initial impact point to its resting point and subsequently caught on fire.
The 46-year-old pilot reported that he had accumulated 207 hours of total flight time and 0 hours of flight in last six months before his last Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) examination for a third-class medical certificate dated December 2, 2019. The pilot was given a notice of disapproval after his initial attempt at a private pilot examination. According to a flight instructor who subsequently endorsed the accident pilot's private pilot retest, the accident pilot's areas of deficiency were the soft field takeoff and the short field landing. The instructor gave the accident pilot four additional instructional flights totaling 8.1 hours of flight time. The instructor did not recall the specifics of the instruction he gave the pilot. However, the pilot satisfactorily passed the retesting for his private pilot certificate on October 21, 2016.
According to initial information from a mechanic who performed maintenance on the accident airplane, the engine exhibited low cylinder compression readings during an annual inspection and cylinders were replaced. The mechanic subsequently flew the airplane with the pilot to seat the rings.
A fuel service receipt shows the accident airplane was fueled on August 26, 2020, about 0945, with 53.34 gallons of 100 low lead aviation gasoline. The airplane was equipped with two 45-gallon fuel tanks, which had a total capacity of 90 gallons of which 89 gallons was usable.
The airplane impacted terrain about a mile southeast of runway 33 at FLY. FAA inspectors examined and documented the wreckage. The left wing, left elevator, and sections of the fuselage were melted, deformed, and discolored consistent with ground fire. The outboard section of the right wing did not exhibit the same extent of thermal deformation and discoloration as the left wing. The fuel tank selector was found selecting the right tank. The propeller hub remained attached to the engine. The propeller blade that remained attached to the hub exhibited melting, deformation, and discoloration. Two propeller blades separated from the propeller hub and outboard sections of those blades exhibited chordwise abrasion. The flap jack screw extension was consistent with retracted flaps.
The airplane and engine were recovered and have been retained for further examination.
The El Paso County Coroner was asked to conduct an autopsy on the pilot and to take toxicological samples.

2020.09.11 01:12 BeccainDenver Quick shakedown - San Juan 3 day

I hate being cold. I'm trying not to pack my fears. I use this site to figure out what to wear outside because I am a freaking toddler and cannot dress myself...or Colorado weather is moody as fuck.
Location/temp range/specific trip description: San Juans, mid 20F-60F (mostly 40s for hiking) with snow on the ground (Silverton station)
Route: Gunnison NF Cataract Lake/Half Peak/Cuba Gulch with optional Niagara Basin - 2 potential routes. Good hiking = 35.7 mi (2 sections per day) or garbage hiking due to recent snow = 24.5 mi total - Sct 1 Day 1; 2&3 on Day 2; 4 on Day 3 (6/11.5/7mi)
Goal Baseweight (BPW): Not 30 lbs. Summer bpw is 13.4 lbs.
Budget: N/A. Just tell me what to not pack.
Non-negotiable Items: Balaclava + allergy sprays + meds = medical issue. Sleeping bag
Solo or with another person?: Solo
Additional Information: First shakedown. Hike pretty hot but am instantly cold when I stop. Sleep cold AF.
Can I get away with Titanium stakes if the ground is frozen?
Stuff I already know about/notes on gear: Headlamp is heavy but I use 4 times a week for an 1-8 hrs all summer. Pretty in love with this headlamp.
Why are boots so heavy? Looking at satellite, with all the snow on the ground, it looks like there is no way I can get away with my ASICS/running shoes on this hike. 5 lbs of worn weight sounds dumb as fuck.

One of the main focuses of the current administration of the US is to reduce illegal immigration by all possible means. With this, we refer not only to increase surveillance at the borders to reduce massive illegal immigration from Central America, but also to the detention of undocumented foreigners who managed to cross the borders without legal documentation and currently reside in the country.
One of the entities in charge of protecting borders and detaining undocumented foreigners is the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is one of the branches of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
ICE staff and facilities have grown substantially during President Trump’s term. In fact, the current administration has hired 10,000 ICE employees in the last three years and another 5,000 specialized agents who protect the borders and detain caravans of undocumented immigrants who plan to enter the US without prior authorization or without a legal immigration process.
Also, ICE has carried out multiple operations with the purpose of detaining undocumented immigrants around the country. For instance, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about the arrests of 64 people in Colorado and Wyoming and another 125 in Texas. This happened only during August, 2020.
On top of that, the Trump administration approves that border forces intervene almost anywhere to be able to arrest individuals who broke the country’s immigration laws by crossing the borders unlawfully.

Now, ICE can arrest immigrants in courthouses

In June, 2019, a federal judge barred border forces from having the right to arrest immigrants in courts, even if these entities suspected they did not have legal documentation.
However, on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, a judge overturned this previous order and ICE has now the power to arrest immigrants in Massachusetts courthouses if there is any indication that they are residing illegally in the US.
This official order unleashed gigantic chaos among immigrant communities, immigrant rights advocates, immigration attorneys and critics, who argue that hundreds of people will avoid going to court for fear of detention or a possible deportation case.
They argue that many legal processes will be incomplete because of this order, as immigrants will never attend a court appointment if their residence in the US could be compromised.

Get your legal documentation as soon as possible

It is quite uncomfortable to constantly worry about possible arrest and even worse, deportation proceedings. That is why illegal immigration never brings positive repercussions for you and your family.
If you need to obtain legal documentation in the US, the best alternative is to seek the help of experienced immigration attorneys and start your process as soon as possible.
In addition to that, current immigration policies have made circumstances more difficult for undocumented immigrants and the benefits available have also been substantially reduced.
Therefore, it is better to avoid precarious situations and have the accompaniment of experts, so that you obtain a positive response to your immigration application.

The Seething Dark: Gideon Farm Part II
Written by Carlos Pandiella
________________________________________
(Continued from part I post)

I didn’t bother with the truck. I moved right to the driver's side to just get in as quickly as possible. Yet, as I pulled on the door, it would not move. The key fit, it turned just fine, the handle was working...but the door would not budge. I looked for any possible reason and even tried the passenger side. I tried the trunk and found the same issue. Then, with a horrible thought, I turned the flashlight to the road under the car. There, in the hot dark, was the same black substance from the farmland. It was pooled under the car like an oil leak. However, it was not just sitting under the car. It was reaching upwards and into the car itself. Tiny tendrils of its substance were wrapped into the vehicle. As I looked up, I could see it spreading throughout the interior of the car itself. Snaking and winding a path from the air conditioner vents to the steering wheel and then the door itself. Then, it threw strings of itself into the window. More and more until it became a thick oozing mass about the size of an arm. As I stared into it with the light, it shuddered and pulsed in odd intervals. Suddenly, with a violent twitch, it broke apart in the middle and formed a milky black orb. I looked on with equal parts horror and curiosity as it formed something around the sides of the orb. With a fluid and slimy effect, the sides of the orb closed in on itself and then opened again.
The thought of what it was did not hit me right away. Then, with shaking hands, I realized what I saw. This thing, this crawling oily nothing from the farm, it had just blinked. I was being watched. This thing made an eye and was now watching me. I began to back away as I noticed more and more of the same milky black orbs blinking around other parts of the car.
This stuff, whatever it was, had...intent. It was not just growing and expanding. It was moving, exploring, touching, and knowing. There is a strange terror that comes from realizing something is sentient. It’s an old fear that comes up through your genes. The fear of a predator maybe. Knowing that something is capable of directed thought. Then knowing that that thought process may be aimed at you.
I overcame the fear, if only for the moment, and began to run down the road. I can’t say how long it was, but after some time I remember hearing the sound of glass shattering. It was followed by a screeching tear of metal that seemed to go on forever. Inside that noise, I again heard something else. Screaming or loud speaking, I can’t fathom which. All I know is I did not want to turn around to know anything else about it. I ran and ran as hard as I could. My legs began to liquify and painful fire ran along my every breath. I could not tell if I was getting anywhere as the pervasive darkness was seemingly getting worse. I stuck to the road as best as possible, yet at some point, I ended up in a grassy area.
However, In the distance, I could see something, A light. With an ever-encroaching smell of rotten heat behind me, I forced myself to at least push on to that light. With my body nearly spent and a breath that I could not hope to catch, I made my way to the light source. It was a camp trailer hitched to an old truck. I tried so hard to call out for help, to ask for assistance, for anything, but my words were lost to exhaustion. My legs quivered and shut down on me mere feet from the trailer. Just as I was about to give in and let the dark take me, I saw the door open.
A woman stepped out, dressed in the same protective suit as the person I found in the barn. However, she did not have the head covering attached, allowing me to see her face. I never got her name. She was slender, short black hair, tan skin, maybe...brown eyes? I can remember. I know she helped me into the trailer. I heard her struggling with me as she tried to get me standing. At some point, we got inside. She was frantically working the door, trying to get it to lock and shut properly. I must have blacked out for just a moment or two. Parts of the ordeal are missing to me.
Once I got my senses back, I pulled out some water from my backpack. She looked at it with such a longing face, it was apparent that she wanted some. I shared another bottle I had along with an energy bar. She thanked me and advised that she had not eaten in nearly 2 days. As you could imagine, I had a bevy of questions for her. Who was she, what was she doing here, what was that stuff outside?
After she devoured the last of the power bar, she got quiet and calm. She sat straight and looked me square in the eye. She said she would tell me that she was here to handle cleaning duty for a client, but she could tell me nothing else. The way she said it, it was not a tone of authority but rather one of servitude. She could not tell me because she was not allowed too but also because she was afraid to as well. I wanted to press further but she held a finger to her mouth to silence me. “Quiet now”, she said. I abided, more out of confusion than submission. She pointed to the roof and single window of the camper. Something was crawling on top of it. It sounded like it had weight to it. After a moment, the heavy thuds on the roof went away. We waited in the silence for a few moments before speaking. She looked at me and said that the job her team came to do went sideways. She noted that from my clothing I was not prepared for what was here, so I either didn't know or I shouldn’t know.
I told her that I was hired to retrieve items from the farm site, nothing more. I explained what I had seen there, the substance that chased me, the signs, and noises. I also told her about the body I found in the barn. She seemed visibly upset by this but held whatever emotion was there in check. She asked if I saw anyone else. I replied I had not, to which she seemed angered. “I was waiting for a relief team”, she told me. “I guess they are not coming or already failed”, she added.
I inquired about the trailer she was in. She told me her team was attacked by something. When it happened they ran back towards their van but it was missing. Some people died right in front of her from something she could not see. Others just went silent and disappeared. She said she ran through the house and grabbed the keys to the truck outside. She drove until it ran out of gas and then hid in the trailer. She said the battery might go out at any point. She had been running it for a day already.
At this point, I was starting to clear up and understand that what she was saying didn’t make sense. I told her I did not pass a truck on the way here. She said she was there for over a day already, and I would have passed her. She smiled and looked away. “Nothing here works right mister”, she said, throwing down her empty water bottle. “When we got here it was early morning, yet the sky was dark as midnight”. She said. “I know that when I drove, I hit that pedal and was on the road for hours....hours”, she said closing her eyes. She seemed so distraught at that statement. “Yet, when I look outside hearing the noise and see you...I…”, she trailed off barely pushing back a stream of tears.
I asked her what was wrong, what happened. She cleared her eyes and said that she saw it. I asked again for clarity, what did she see? “I saw the farmhouse, barn, the black sky reaching out for me”, she said. “Hours, I drove for hours...How can it still be there?”, she asked with new tears welling up. “This place, this farm, it’s not just that. The whole place is more. It’s awake and hungry”, she said with a shiver on the last few words. “This stuff...it watches me, you, all of us from inside the barn”, she added.
I inquired at what she meant by that last part. “What do you mean, it watches from the barn”, I asked. She said she saw it for a moment, it was not really in the barn, more or less it was in the ground, all over the place. She said it talked to her for a moment, and then a bit more since she had been in the trailer. She said the thing wanted her to come back. She began to ramble a bit at this point and after a few minutes, she just went quiet. She reminded me of a woman who had been beaten by her husband from an old case I worked back when I was still an honest man. She would talk about the things he wanted from her and why he was great, or maybe the stress he was under. Anything but the black eyes and broken bones he gave her. After a bit of defending him, her mind, or maybe her heart, would just shut down and she would just sit there staring into a wall mumbling nonsense. It was like she just ran out of enough support for her own lies. She went numb and cold.
This woman in the trailer seemed to be doing the same thing. However, her issues seemed to be that she ran out of sanity for the time being. I could relate, my own mind was still reeling from what I had seen and heard. I tried to talk to her again over the course of the following hour. Yet, she seemed to fall asleep and from the looks of it, it was the first time she had done so in a while.
I tried my best to concoct a plan of action, come up with some rational ideas, but I could not seem to think straight. She was right. Something about this place, it’s wrong. The sky, the time, the smells, all of it wrong. It seemed to be getting worse by the moment as well. I checked my phone and saw that the date was now nearly one month ahead of when I had first arrived. I knew that was impossible, it had to be. Yet again, was what I saw possible?
Unable to sleep and needing to work my mind into something stable, I decided to look through the contents of the satchel that I picked up in the barn. Opening it, I found three items inside. A simple knife, nothing remarkable about it. Next was a picture of some sort of lettering. It loosely matched some of the odd markings I found on the crumbling signs around the farm. Last, was something I was surprised to find. A thick brown envelope. It was just like the ones I would receive my cases in. Although, where mine had a stamped number three, this one had a number five on it.
I was taken aback of course. These people, this woman next to me, seemingly all worked for the same people. My people? I looked over to the woman, she was still sleeping, deeply at that. I decided to open the envelope and look for myself. Inside there were two separate papers. One had directions to the farm with instructions to destroy everything once they had collected the needed samples. It also noted that if the fire was not working then they should employ the second and third level “cleans” as needed. No mention of, what those were, but I suspect some form of explosive or corrosive compounds might have been in use.
The second paper...now that one was a shock to read through. You see, in that paper the team seemed to have a secondary objective. It was to kill/destroy any evidence of a level 3 investigation they found. The paper noted my name right next to a picture of me. It said I had been AWOL for over two months and I was suspected of being “indoctrinated” by something called “Halawa Rinn”. Reading further it stated confirmation that I had already killed the two members of the level 4 recon team and one from another level 5 team. It said the other members of that team were unaccounted for. However, it cites streamed video evidence as proof of my actions.
I...I could not believe what I was reading. That stuff, that thing on the farm, I know that in itself is something crazy. Yet, even so, this report. The mention of my supposed murders, the time difference, all of it. I could not handle it. I seemed to be the final kick to my own mental supports. I lost it for a moment. I don't know why, but I screamed into the paper, into my hands. I felt disconnected from myself at the time. I stood up, jabbering about the inconsistency, the sheer lunacy of all this. The woman woke up looking at me with wide eyes.
I moved right over to her and asked, “Which team are you with, the recon or the cleanup?”. She looked shocked, but as I asked her again in a much firmer tone. I must have looked absolutely insane to her thinking back on it. She stammered something, and it fueled my lunatic anger at the moment. I asked again with a spitting rage. “The recon...I’m with the recon”, she finally stuttered out. “I asked her about the letter I found, the instructions to “deal with me”. She said she knew nothing about it. She had never even known there was a group called the cleaners. Nor did she know who I was, adding that if she did she would have not tried to help me when she saw me. She also noted that she did not know another recon team had been sent.
I stood there in wild thought trying to process any of what I had learned. Of course, I considered right away that she was lying, but even some of that didn’t make sense. The weight of confusion and sheer exhaustion had crumbled my once stoic mental fortitude. I came to realize that the woman was now still sitting where she lay, but also now holding a knife. The look in her face was obvious in her silent questions. “No, I did not kill anyone”, I said frankly. Yet, she still maintained her grip on the knife and motioned it towards the door. She wanted me gone, out of the trailer. I knew the feeling, she could trust me in this infuriating heated darkness any more than I could her.
Without any further dialog, I backed out of the trailer, keen to keep my eyes on her as I did. Once outside I heard her lock the door. Seconds later she began to sob again. I wanted to feel more than pity for her, but a guttural echo sounded out across the dark. It was hard to see anything, but I did find the paved road again. My backpack and light were still in the trailer. I began to wander through the dark, the thick heat of the area crashed into me like waves. Some stronger than others. At times I stumbled as they came over me, nearly knocking me to the ground. I felt that if I were to fall, the weight of the heat and dark would overtake me.
I can not describe the length of road I traveled or for how long. I had completely divorced myself from the idea of time at this point. After some while, I saw a break in the dark. The road appeared clearer, even straighter. The heat dripped away little by little, but never totally left. Still, it was a slight bit more endurable. Then, a glint of slivered light shone in the distance. Small at first, but quickly increasing in scale. As it neared, I realized what it was. My mind understood what the eyes had seen, yet, as with so much in that place, it could not be. It was my car. My car, with me in it, driving through the early day sunshine. It was me on the way to the farm.
I tried to scream, jump up and down, cry out, even wave my arms. The car for a moment seemed to slow down. The windows were down, I could see me. The “me” in the car looked puzzled for a brief few seconds before driving away. Driving down towards the farm. I was furious at the fool in the car. I began to yell profane and horrible things. As I did, an itch started on my leg, then moved up to my back. I looked down at myself and saw a trail of soot or ash seemingly crawling upwards from my leg. I frantically shook it off and ran further down the road.
The thing is, the further and further, I ran, it was pointless. You see, much like the woman in the trailer, I had never bothered to look back again. Not really. At some point, I thought to myself the car might come back and decided to turn and see. When I did, I saw it. The farm, the clearing, it was all right there. It was like I never ran at all. My car was missing. Only some odd markings and stains remained on the road where it once was. I looked for the trailer and the woman as well for a moment. I never saw either one again.
I decided to make my way back to the farm. I was tired and done. Mind you, I was still afraid. It’s just that at some point when your mind falters, that fear falls to background noise. Something like a dull headache. You know it hurts, you know it's there, but you move along anyways if you can. This was me moving because I could. I was moving because I did not know what else to do. My approach through the clearing was much the same as before. However this time I could see other people running through the farm ahead of me. All of them had a visible smear to them as if I was watching oil painting in motion. Some dressed in the same protective gear, others in simple plain clothes. I even saw two dressed in what seemed like high-end military gear with weapons at the ready. Some of these people passed me but never seemed to know I was there. As I neared the farm itself, I could see something happening around the back of the house.
There was a man, or what could have been a man, soaring through the night sky. It looked like he was thrown from something...or by something. I saw a small child run behind me and disappear into the clearing. Something else came after him, something monstrous and opaque. I could not properly see what it was, but it was nothing close to human. In the direction of the burned-out barn, I saw a haze of smoke and eerie lights. Pushing forward I noted the structure was no longer burned down but standing. Albeit with some odd pulsing growths covering it. There was some kind of commotion going inside, but I could not make it out.
My attention turned behind me as one of the more militantly geared phantoms ran into me. For a moment, I thought he had seen me, and looked like he wanted to say something. I was relieved to have someone else with me. However, that was a short-lived thought as he drew his weapon on me. I ran around the side of the house for cover, sure he was going to drop me. Yet, it never happened. I watched as he just stood there frozen and then seemed to drip upwards into the dark sky. Watching his form liquify into the stars, I saw something else. On top of the old barn where I had found the other envelope, something sat watching it all. A mass of blackened grease and other fetid rotting components. Not so much a form, than a concept. It had what could be called slender arms and a bulbous head of some sort. I saw it was filled with many of the same black glittering orbs that I saw in my car. Eyes, eyes for everything. They rolled around seemingly focusing and unfocusing on various events happening at the farm. More screams came from the land around me. I turned to see someone in the protective gear set running into the barn with the monstrous thing sitting atop. It turned a third of its eyes down into the structure and made some form of jerky movement. This was followed by a sound like roaring water and another, now, muffled scream.
I stumbled backward, shocked at the sights. An intense fear was crawling its way back to the forefront of my mind causing me to lose footing and crash against part of the house. As I did, nearly all of the thing’s eyes turned on to me. I could feel them. The force of its vision was tangible and terrible. It was as if it could reach out and feel you with its gaze. I fought the feeling and pulled away from the sensation of being drowned in its intense view. I needed to leave. I wanted anything that was not this. I had to get away.
I looked for a way to hide, a way to disappear from that place. Then, as I turned to run, I saw the van. It was just sitting there running with the lights on. I made my way over and saw bloodstains over the driver's side. Whomever the blood belonged to was gone. In a moment of flight taking over, I jumped into the driver seat and started to drive. I didn't care if the damn road didn’t take me anywhere. I was driving, running, escaping even if just for the smallest of moments.
I drove through the dark farmland and even through the clearing, caring little for any possible pitfalls it may have. I pushed and even willed the van to drive onward. I crossed the clearing and made my way to the road. It was even in worse condition now. Cracks and potholes littered it. It didn’t matter, I drove on. At some point, I think I even blew a tire. The grinding noise may have been something else, but in the chaos of the flight, I cared little to check. The heat and darkness was still oppressive as it had been. Yet, the feeling of that crawling set of eyes on my back was all I could think about. Even then, in the van, driving as fast as I could that alien touch at my skin was tearing at the last shreds of sanity I had.
In a roar of sheer desperation, I closed my eyes and screamed out into the nightmare. I hurled profanities and curses as far out into the void as possible. I think I even remember laughing into the hot waves of pressure as the windshield buckled and cracked. I think I truly lost it there on that desolate piece of road. Yet, somehow I prevailed.
I opened my eyes and found myself laying amongst the bushes by the side of the road. Not a road or place I was familiar with. There was a cool wind on my back and the fresh patter of rain was coming down around me. However, the most important detail was the sky was not a deeply darkened void. The sun was there. I was there. I don’t know how or why I was able to leave that place...the farm. I don’t even know what happened to the van.
It took me some time to walk to a rest stop. From there I found I was in the state of Colorado. I explained to a passing officer that I was attacked and left for dead. I did not know what else to say. I found out I had been declared missing by friends of mine. I had been gone for over a month. I had some odd issues to sort out and lies to tell. Yet, after a few days, I was able to get back to my home a few states over. My house had been ransacked. When I tried to leave I caught a car tailing me. I was able to lose it, but I was sure it was another “cleaning” crew or something of the like left behind just in case I came back. I pulled out all my available funds and dropped my credit cards. I took a trip to see my friend Eric. As I said at the start, he didn’t seem to make it. I found evidence that he was trying to look for me. We worked for the same employer. He was privy to my cases and knew where I went. It seemed that he also tried to make something else he found out about that accursed farmland public. Something that the people up top wanted to be buried. So it seems they did just that with poor Eric.
There is something wrong at that place. I don’t think you can even properly reach it, not unless you find the right opening. Yet, it’s still there. I know it is. I can still feel that sickening sense of touch from time to time. Like that monster’s gaze is still there, on top of that barn just gazing out into the world.
I don’t know where this will go, but I do plan on investigating further. I came across another story of something happening in New Orleans research hospital. A patient by the name of Aaron Nelms was mentioned in an internal email by a now-dead researcher at the facility. It was part of Eric’s notes. The details mention something living in the walls, something watching them all. It’s a derelict path at best, but I can't stay in this cabin forever. Perhaps this Aaron Nelms could have some answers?
One way or another I am going to see what they are doing. Maybe I can help someone, maybe just myself. Either way, I am stepping back into that dark. I’ll drop this document with directions to copy and circulate. Perhaps you’ll hear it, perhaps you won’t.
I just hope if you do, you stay away from Gideon Farm.

Nothing good grows there anymore...

I will guild anyone who helps me: Confusing wording on PUA led to mistakenly signing up for Colorado PUA instead of Hawaii UI... Unique situation. Am I screwed?
I will have my questions in bold on the bottom. I know it's a lot to read, and I don't expect anyone to know what to do, but this is in desperation. From one grateful human to another, thanks for any help you can offer.

Background:

I'm a 24-year old self-employed videographer and editor for the last few years. I moved back to Colorado in June 2019 after a short living period in Honolulu, Hawaii for 10 months. Other than self-employed work, I only had two W-2 jobs in Honolulu in 2019, one for $2,000 and one for $1,400. Other than that, all money I made was through self-employment. These two W2 jobs were one-time production jobs on-set, not a standard-W-2 employee "job".
Now, from June 2019 to December 2019, I continued work full time as a self-employed videographer in Denver, Colorado. I earned no W2 income during this period of time last year, only self-employed income. I don't make much.
When COVID hit hard in March 2020, all of my planned/booked events and productions for the foreseeable future were canceled or put on hold indefinitely or rescheduled. Each week I lost thousands in future income planned, and the situation looked more dire with every unfortunate phone call from cancelling clients.
I applied for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA, basically Unemployment Insurance for self-employed citizens) program in Denver, CO, because I was self-employed, especially here in Colorado.
I applied for the PUA instead of regular UI based on the criteria posted on the Colorado.gov site below. Take special note in the wording of how they describe the way 2019 W2 income affects eligibility.
The wording describing PUA eligibility is confusing
I had made less than "$2,500 in wages on a W-2 from any employer", as shown here on the website. A single W-2 form from any employer. That's what this sentence says, does it not?
I had made less than $2,500 in wages on any single W-2 form, so I continued to application. I was approved and was diligent about my weekly certifications for 17 weeks until work started again.

For 17 weeks, I (thankfully) received this financial aid in the form of the PUA and an extra $600/week, keeping me and my business afloat.

But this morning (Sept 4th), I received this notice in my email:

Page 1 stating that my W2 wages were too much to qualify for PUA, and instead I should have applied for Hawaii Unemployment Insurance.

Page 2, indicating my entire PUA amount must be repaid.
After 17 weeks of PUA assistance plus the bonus $600/week helping me financially support myself and my now-struggling business of many years, I received this email on September 4th that stated my PUA was determined ineligible because I had "sufficient qualifying wages" to file a State Unemployment Insurance claim with the state of Hawaii. This was a shocking surprise because I had barely worked in Hawaii; nearly all of my income came from the majority of my year in Denver, Colorado. I had also only received up to $2,000 on one of my W-2's during my time in Hawaii, definitely under the maximum allowed to apply for the PUA.
Colorado's Department of Labor and Employment is now requesting I pay back the $13,991.00 that was used to support my basic needs during the pandemic period of unemployment.
Stupefied, I went back and looked at the requirements. I quote from the Colorado.gov PUA homepage as of 9/4/20: "If you received $2,500 or more in wages on a W-2 from any employer where taxes were withheld since January 2019."
Did I receive more than $2,500 in wages on any W2 from any employer? No. The most I made from a single employer on a W2 was $2,002.00. Hence why I applied for the PUA. This wording is not only confusing, but clearly makes its intentions out to focus on any single W-2 form.
I can file an appeal:

Page 3, how to appeal
--------------------------------------------------------

Here are my questions:

  1. If I choose to try to appeal my case, do you think I have a case? The wording regarding "total W2 income" vs "a single w2 form of income" is definitely confusing and inaccurate, and is found in multiple locations on the website and throughout the application process. Should I try to appeal based on this confusing wording? Or is there another reason to appeal?
  2. Should I instead try to pay this back, and instead apply for Hawaii state unemployment, hoping Hawaii can retroactively pay me unemployment for the time listed in my PUA Determination?
  3. The biggest issue with option #2 is that the $600/week here on Colorado's PUA was critical. If I apply for HI UI, will I retroactively be given unemployment during my dates on the PUA, WITH the $600/week bonus included?
I can answer any questions you might have for me. Thank you in advance, this is a life-changing amount of money for someone struggling like I am now.

2020.09.03 20:50 TheUnknownStitcher General Election Polling Discussion Thread (September 2nd, 2020)

Introduction

Welcome to the /politics polling discussion thread for the general election. As the election nears, polling of both the national presidential popular vote and important swing states is ramping up, and with both parties effectively deciding on nominees, pollsters can get in the field to start assessing the state of the presidential race. Please use this thread to discuss polling and the general state of the presidential or congressional election. Below, you'll find some of the most recent polls, but this is by no means exhaustive, as well as some links to prognosticators sharing election models.
As always though, polls don't vote, people do. Regardless of whether your candidate is doing well or poorly, democracy only works when people vote, and there are always at least a couple polling misses every cycle, some of which are pretty high profile. If you haven't yet done so, please take some time to register to vote or check your registration status.

Polls

Below is a collection of recent polling of the US Presidential election. This is likely incomplete and also omits the generic congressional ballot as well as Senate/House/Gubernatorial numbers that may accompany these polls. Please use the discussion space below to discuss any additional polls not covered. Additionally, not all polls are created equal. If this is your first time looking at polls, the FiveThirtyEight pollster ratings page is a helpful tool to assess historic partisan lean in certain pollsters, as well as their past performance.
With the conclusion of both major parties’ nominating conventions, pollsters scrambled into the field to conduct polls of swing states and the national race. The result has been a slew of high quality pollsters releasing their numbers on Wednesday as well as today, which paint a picture of the electorate right after the candidates are expected to have received a temporary convention bounce.

Election Predictions

Prognosticators

Prognosticators are folks who make projected electoral maps, often on the strength of educated guesses as well as inside information in some cases from campaigns sharing internals with the teams involved. Below are a few of these prognosticators and their assessment of the state of the race:

Polling Models

Polling models are similar to prognosticators (and often the model authors will act like pundits as well), but tend to be about making "educated guesses" on the state of the election. Generally, the models are structured to take in data such as polls and electoral fundamentals, and make a guess based on research on prior elections as to the state of the race in each state. Below are a few of the more prominent models that are online or expected to be online soon:

Prediction Markets

Prediction markets are betting markets where people put money on the line to estimate the likelihood of one party winning a seat or state. Most of these markets will also tend to move depending on polling and other socioeconomic factors in the same way that prognosticators and models will work. Predictit and Election Betting Odds are prominent in this space, although RealClearPolitics has an aggregate of other betting sites as well.
